10th House
Definition
The 10th house is the angular house — one of the four "corner" houses — at the top of the chart, the highest point a planet reaches as it arcs across the sky by day. In quadrant systems it begins at the Midheaven (MC); in whole sign houses, where each house is a whole zodiac sign, it is the tenth sign counted on from your rising sign. It sits opposite the IC at the bottom of the chart and squares (sits at right angles to) the Ascendant–Descendant horizon.
In Tradition
Astrologers read the 10th house as the house of career, public reputation, your action in the world, and what you are known for. The Greek name for the Midheaven, mesouranema, was paired with the idea of praxis — action or activity — which made the 10th the place of your most visible doing. Traditional doctrine ranks it among the most powerful houses for producing outcomes you can see.
In Practice
Astrologers look to the 10th house for your vocation, public standing, and authority. The sign on the Midheaven, its ruling planet, any planets in the house, and aspects to the MC are weighed for career direction and professional path. Transits of the outer planets to your natal MC are watched for shifts in vocation. In Hellenistic practice the 10th is read alongside the Lot of Spirit — a calculated point tied to action and intent — and the lord of the year, the planet given charge of a particular year of life. In mundane astrology, which reads charts for nations, the 10th stands for the head of state, the government, and the nation's standing; in horary — answering a question from the chart of the moment — it stands for kings, employers, and judges. Whole sign and quadrant accounts can diverge: the MC degree may fall in the ninth or eleventh sign from the Ascendant, and is then treated as a sensitive point separate from the tenth sign.
Historical Origin
In Hellenistic astrology the Midheaven had three distinct definitions, per Brennan and Holden: the tenth whole sign from the rising sign, the meridian degree (mesouranema kata moiran), and the cusp of the tenth quadrant house. Crane reports its original meanings — reputation and career, what one does (praxis) — carrying forward into the present, with Paulus assigning the lights in the 10th to a distinguished father and a secondary marriage signification. Firmicus Maternus identifies the 10th, as the Midheaven, with the tenth sign from the Hour-Marker.
