Amala Yoga
sanskrit: अमल योग (Amala Yoga)
Definition
Amala Yoga — amala means "spotless" or "stainless" — is a named planetary combination you find when a benefic (a helpful planet) sits in the 10th house. Per BPHS Ch.36 Sl.5-6 (Santhanam), it asks for a benefic alone in the 10th counted from your ascendant or your Moon, with no malefic (a harmful planet) there; Santhanam adds that a malefic joining that 10th voids it. Rao describes it for a benefic Mercury in the 10th, and again for Venus. Raman lists it among the auspicious combinations bearing on reputation and conduct.
In Tradition
Across these classical and modern Jyotish sources, Amala Yoga is read as a benefic-in-the-10th combination that is held to confer lasting fame and a spotless reputation. The BPHS says it verbatim — the yoga "will confer fame lasting till the moon and stars exist." Rao and Raman likewise tie it to enduring fame and to reputation and conduct, beyond the bare formation rule.
In Practice
A jyotishi (Vedic astrologer) spots Amala Yoga by checking the 10th house — counted from both the ascendant and the Moon — for a benefic occupant with no malefic present (BPHS, Santhanam). Per BPHS Ch.36 Sl.5-6, the person is read as honoured by the king, enjoying abundant pleasures, charitable, fond of relatives, helpful to others, pious and virtuous, with fame lasting as long as the moon and stars exist. Santhanam adds that a malefic joining the 10th voids the yoga, and that while Parasara does not list wealth among the results, Phala Deepika does. Rao reads a benefic Mercury or Venus in the 10th as bringing lasting fame and a prosperous life.
Historical Origin
Amala Yoga is attested in the classical Brihat Parasara Hora Sastra, Ch.36 Sl.5-6, attributed to Maharshi Parasara, in the translation by R. Santhanam, who also cites Phala Deepika. It carries into modern works too: the Bhrigu Samhita rendering by T.M. Rao (pp.303, 306) and Raman's Notable Horoscopes (Index of Technical Terms, p.433).
