Definition
A visibility-based calculation of a fixed star's or planet's phase relative to the Sun — the moment at which the body can actually be seen rising or setting near sunrise or sunset, after correction for atmospheric extinction, sky brightness, and the body's magnitude. The modern Western fixed-star tradition computes apparent phase using an arcus-visionis threshold (the Sun-to-star angular separation at which the star becomes naked-eye visible) that varies with magnitude — Brady's first-magnitude approximation places the heliacal rising at roughly 11° of arc.

Across the Hellenistic and modern Western traditions the apparent phase is the visibility-determined refinement of the abstract astronomical phase (ϕάσις). Lightfoot's commentary on Pseudo-Manetho records the Hellenistic doctrine: 'daytime planets are at home when they rise before the Sun (τὴν ἑῴαν ἀνατολήν), and nighttime planets after it (τὴν ἑσπερίαν ἀνατολήν).' The modern arcus-visionis calculation extends the same eastern/western-rising framework with an observationally-derived magnitude-dependent threshold.

Practitioners working with fixed stars compute the apparent heliacal rising of a star — its first visible appearance above the horizon shortly before sunrise after a period of invisibility — and treat that moment as the activation point for the star's significations. The technique is used in event timing (a fixed star's heliacal rising near a natal angle is read as an activation window), in mundane astrology (heliacal-rising charts of cardinal stars), and in birth-chart interpretation of contemporary fixed-star aspects to natal planets. The phase distinction between eastern (morning) rising and western (evening) rising — inherited from Hellenistic phasis — informs whether the body's significations operate by daytime or nighttime register.
