AS/MC Midpoint

Definition

The point in the zodiac that lies halfway between the Ascendant degree and the Medium Coeli (Midheaven) degree — a specific application of the general midpoint technique. Notated 'AS/MC' in the Hamburg School / Cosmobiology shorthand, it is read as a sensitive point combining the symbolic charge of both of the chart's two most-prominent angles.

The general midpoint doctrine on which AS/MC rests is the Hamburg School and Cosmobiology principle (German Halbsumme) that the half-sum of any two chart-factors operates as a sensitive point carrying their joint influence, especially when a third planet contacts it by hard aspect. Holden's definition is canonical: a midpoint is 'half way between two planets (or between a planet and the ascending or Midheaven degree).' The AS/MC pair applies the technique to the two angles themselves.

In Practice

Practitioners working in the Ebertin Cosmobiology and Witte Hamburg School traditions identify the AS/MC midpoint by simple arithmetic (mean of the two longitudes, or its 180° opposite) and watch for planets, transits, and progressions making hard aspects (conjunction, opposition, square, semi-square, sesqui-square) to it within tight orb. Contacts with the AS/MC midpoint are read as periods touching the joint identity-and-vocation axis of the chart — events affecting how the person presents themselves in the world and how they are publicly recognised. The technique is widely used outside the Hamburg School proper, including by mainstream modern Western practitioners who adopt midpoints selectively without taking on the schools' full machinery. Holden notes a theoretical critique: midpoints are calculated without regard to the relative force of the two factors, which some practitioners regard as a methodological weakness.

Midpoint technique is documented as a German invention of the 1920s — the Hamburg School founded by Alfred Witte and the parallel Cosmobiology school developed by Reinhold Ebertin. Holden's *History of Horoscopic Astrology* p. 283 traces the doctrine to these schools and to canonical references *Rule Book for Planetary Pictures* (Witte / Lefeldt) and *The Combination of Stellar Influences* (Ebertin). The AS/MC midpoint belongs to this lineage; Munkasey 1990 carries the doctrine into late-20th-century American practice.
