Astrological Mandala
Definition
The astrological mandala is a way of seeing the birth chart as a circular symbol of wholeness — a mandala in the Jungian sense — that holds every part of the psyche and stands for your full potential to become integrated. It comes from Dane Rudhyar's humanistic astrology, especially his book An Astrological Mandala (1973), and it treats every factor in the chart as belonging to one connected pattern rather than acting as an isolated influence.
In Tradition
In humanistic and Jungian-influenced practice, the mandala framing supports a holistic reading discipline: no placement is "good" or "bad" on its own, because each factor serves the larger pattern of the whole self. Rudhyar stressed that the chart should be read as a single living symbol, with attention to the overall gestalt rather than to separate, piecemeal delineations. This framing is the philosophical ground beneath much late-20th-century person-centered astrology and beneath the Sabian Symbols literature.
In Practice
An astrologer working in the mandala mode reads the chart top-down — the overall balance between hemispheres, the emphasis among the modalities, the spread of the elements, the dominant aspect-pattern — before zooming in on individual placements. A difficult placement is framed as part of the whole configuration rather than as a defect to be cancelled out. Transits and progressions are read as the same mandala unfolding over time, bringing different sectors of the integrated whole to the surface at different life stages. The framing also sets the counseling tone: the astrologer reads with the client as someone working toward wholeness, not as a forecaster announcing fixed outcomes.
Historical Origin
Rudhyar's An Astrological Mandala (1973) is the canonical statement. The framing draws on C. G. Jung's symbolism of the mandala as the self, developed across Jung's writings from 1929 to 1958, and on the Sabian Symbols — the 360 degree-symbols dictated to Marc Edmund Jones by Elsie Wheeler in 1925. Earlier classical and medieval traditions did not frame the chart in mandala terms; this is a 20th-century synthesis of astrology with depth psychology.
