Cancer
KAN-ser
greek: Καρκίνος (Karkinos) · latin: Cancer · sanskrit: Karka
Definition
Cancer is the fourth sign of the zodiac, covering 90 to 120 degrees of the ecliptic — the Sun's yearly path around the sky. It is a cardinal water sign ruled by the Moon, with Jupiter exalted (especially strong) at 15 degrees Cancer and Mars in fall (weakened) here. The Sun moves through Cancer from roughly June 21 to July 22, starting at the summer solstice in the Northern Hemisphere. Cancer is feminine in the odd/even polarity, and belongs to the water triplicity with Scorpio and Pisces. Hellenistic astrology called the cardinal signs tropika, "turning," for the seasonal turning points.
In Tradition
Astrologers in the Western tradition link Cancer with emotional awareness, nurturing, and a real need for security. The sign is traditionally tied to home, family, roots, and the instinct to protect — an echo of the Moon's link to cycles of care and feeding.
In Practice
In a birth chart, astrologers read Cancer placements when looking at emotional temperament, family dynamics, and what makes someone feel safe. Because the Moon rules Cancer, placements here are read for how strongly they respond to the Moon's transits — its passages around the chart — and to progressions, a slow symbolic advance of the chart over time. Jupiter's exaltation in Cancer is noted in dignity assessments — the weighing of a planet's strength by sign. In horary astrology — answering a specific question from a chart cast for the moment it is asked — a strong showing of cardinal signs suggests situations that shift fast but may not last. Mars in fall in Cancer is read for difficulty with direct, head-on assertion.
Historical Origin
Cancer appears as one of the twelve zodiacal signs in the earliest Hellenistic texts. Hellenistic sources record Cancer as a movable (tropika) sign of the water triplicity. The Moon is given as its ruler under the scheme in which the two luminaries each rule one sign and the other five planets rule two signs apiece. In medical astrology, the body regions matched to Cancer are the stomach and breasts.
