Domicile Lord

Definition
The domicile lord (Greek oikodespotēs, Οἰκοδεσπότης, "house-master") is the planet that rules the zodiac sign another planet sits in, and that carries responsibility for how its visitor fares. In Hellenistic reading, the domicile lord is the main capacity-test for any planet: the lord's own condition decides whether the planet living in its sign can deliver what it promises.
In Tradition
Across Hellenistic, Arabic-Persian, medieval-Latin, and traditional-revival practice, the domicile lord — also called the "dispositor" in modern English — is the foundational relationship of rulership in a chart. Brennan, Hand, and Houlding, following Vettius Valens, Dorotheus, and Ptolemy, weigh the lord's sign and house, its dignity, its standing with sect, its aspects — and, above all, whether it can aspect the sign it rules rather than fall into aversion. These are the primary inputs to judging the planet inside that sign.
In Practice
You judge a planet's condition by first finding its domicile lord, then weighing that lord's placement and aspects. A planet whose lord is angular and dignified is strongly supported even if the planet itself is weakened; one whose lord is in aversion, cadent, or harmed cannot deliver its significations even when otherwise well-placed. Chains of rulership map the chart's power structure: if A's lord is B, and B's lord is C, the chain usually resolves at a final ruler or a closed loop of mutual reception, where two planets rule each other's signs. In horary practice, the domicile lord of the house governing the question is its chief significator (Lilly, Christian Astrology III). In time-lord work, the lord of the sign reached by annual profection becomes the salkhudhāy, the Lord of the Year. Whether the lord receives its visitor — by sign or by aspect — decides whether the relationship helps, obstructs, or stays neutral.
Historical Origin
The oikodespotēs doctrine is documented in Vettius Valens' Anthologiae (c. 145-175 CE), Ptolemy's Tetrabiblos III (c. 150 CE), Dorotheus of Sidon's Carmen Astrologicum (1st c. CE), and Hephaistio of Thebes' Apotelesmatics. The Pahlavi-into-Arabic transmission keeps the term as kadhkhudhāh (Persian Nativities I, Dykes glossary). Bonatti's Liber Astronomiae (13th c.) and Lilly's Christian Astrology (1647) settle the medieval-Latin and English forms.
