Eighth House (Ayu/Randhra Bhava)
RUN-dhra / AH-yoo BHAH-va
sanskrit: रन्ध्र (Randhra)
Definition
The Eighth house is the bhava (house) that Jyotish calls Randhra Bhava ('the vulnerable or assailable point') and Ayu Bhava (the house of longevity). In the Brihat Parasara Hora Sastra, Parasara gives its primary indication as longevity (ayus), the length of your life, and counts it among the dusthanas, the difficult houses. Beyond lifespan it is read for death and the wealth of the dead, for chronic, hidden or secret afflictions, transformation, the occult, inheritance and legacy, sudden events, and disgrace. A planet sitting here is, by this house's logic, vulnerably placed.
In Tradition
Across the classical and modern Jyotish literature, astrologers treat the Eighth as the chief house of longevity (ayus): the length of a life is judged from it, and because it governs the span of life it also points to death. The strength or weakness of the planets and lords tied to it is read as lengthening or shortening that span.
In Practice
A jyotishi (Vedic astrologer) reads the Eighth first for longevity — the length of life and, through that, death. Charak counts the houses of life, the Ayu-sthanas, as the 8th with the 3rd (the 8th from the 8th). Rayudu reads it also for the chronic, hidden or undiagnosed ailments that shorten life: a benefic planet here supports a long life, while a malefic brings the diseases that curtail it. You also weigh the Eighth lord (Randhradhipati, this house's ruler): the BPHS says that when the 8th lord sits in the 8th itself it should be strong in Shadbala (its six-fold strength) for long life, and if it lacks that strength the person will not enjoy a full span. Behari treats the Eighth as 'the mysterious unknown', whose occupying sign and that sign's ruling planet matter chart-wide; any planet here becomes important but harms the life-area it rules, and he links its transformative depths to the arousal of the Serpent Fire (kundalini).
Historical Origin
The Eighth house as Randhra Bhava is attested in Parasara's Brihat Parasara Hora Sastra — Ch.7 for the bhava's indication of longevity, Ch.24 for the effects of its lord — here cited in R. Santhanam's translation. Modern authors elaborate its significations: Charak in Elements of Vedic Astrology, Rayudu in How to Read a Horoscope, and Behari in Fundamentals of Vedic Astrology and the Vedic Astrologer's Handbook Vol II.
