Functional Benefic & Malefic

sanskrit: शुभ ग्रह / पाप ग्रह (shubha graha / paapa graha)

Definition

In Jyotish, a graha (planet) has a functional nature — the benefic, or helpful, or malefic, or harmful, role it plays because of which houses it rules from the lagna (ascendant) of a given chart. This is separate from its inherent, or natural, benefic/malefic nature. Since the same planet rules different houses for different ascendants, its functional status shifts from chart to chart and is tabulated per ascendant — one planet can even be benefic by one of its lordships and malefic by another.

In Tradition

Across these sources, a planet's functional benefic or malefic status is set by the houses it lords from the ascendant, and astrologers treat this functional role as separate from the planet's natural nature — so a natural benefic can act as a functional malefic, and a natural malefic as a functional benefic, depending on its lordships in that particular chart.

In Practice

A jyotishi reads each planet's functional nature against the chart's lagna. Working in Rayudu's system, you consult tables giving, for each of the twelve ascendants, which planets are lordship benefic and which are lordship malefic, then assign weightage points; he notes one planet may be both — Jupiter is benefic as 5th lord yet malefic as 8th lord for Leo ascendant. Narasimha Rao instead reads house by house from the lagna: lords of the trines (trikonas) are functional benefics; lords of the 3rd, 6th and 11th are functional malefics; a quadrant (kendra) lord is a functional malefic if it is a natural benefic and functionally neutral if a natural malefic; and lords of the 2nd, 8th and 12th are functionally neutral, the 8th more malefic than the other two. He likens natural nature to whether a person is inherently good or bad, and functional nature to whether the person does good or bad to oneself.

Historical Origin

The functional benefic/malefic distinction comes to us here through modern Jyotish authors. P.V.R. Rayudu sets it out in How to Read a Horoscope, Chapter I, which tabulates lordship benefic and malefic planets for the different ascendants. Narasimha Rao treats it in Vedic Astrology: An Integrated Approach, Chapter 13.2, on functional nature.
