Gemini

JEM-ih-ny

greek: Δίδυμοι (Didymoi) · latin: Gemini · sanskrit: Mithuna

Definition

Gemini is the third sign of the zodiac, covering 60 to 90 degrees of the ecliptic — the circle the Sun appears to travel over a year. It is a mutable air sign ruled by Mercury, and Jupiter is in detriment (out of place) here. In the tropical zodiac, the Sun moves through Gemini from roughly May 21 to June 20, as spring ends and summer begins. Hellenistic astrology places Gemini among the double-bodied (disoma) signs and the air triplicity, the trio of air signs. In the alternating polarity scheme, Gemini reads as a masculine sign.

In Tradition

Astrologers in the Western tradition link Gemini with curiosity, communication, versatility, and the gathering and passing-on of information. The mutable air quality is traditionally read as quick, agile thinking and adaptability — and, alongside that, restlessness and trouble holding focus.

In Practice

In a birth chart, astrologers read Gemini placements for communication style, how someone learns, and a knack for connecting ideas and people. Because Mercury rules Gemini, a Gemini house cusp draws in questions of exchanging information, short trips, and — when it falls on the 3rd cusp — relationships with siblings. As planets transit, or pass through, Gemini, they tend to quicken the pace of events and bring out variety, networking, and information-gathering. Jupiter in detriment in Gemini is read as a traditionally weakened placement. A planet in Gemini is read as working at a faster, more abstract level. In horary astrology — answering a specific question from a chart cast for the moment it is asked — Gemini on a relevant cusp can point to shifting circumstances or two-sided outcomes, in keeping with the double-bodied classification.

Historical Origin

Gemini appears as one of the twelve zodiacal signs in the earliest Hellenistic texts. Hellenistic sources place Gemini among the double-bodied signs (in Greek, disoma), tied to duality and to doubled results. In medical astrology, the body regions matched to Gemini are the hands, arms, and lungs.
