Definition
Kalû (Akkadian; Sumerogram lú.gala) is the Mesopotamian lamentation-priest profession — the temple-functionary class specialising in the cultic pacification of angered gods through lament-chanting. Its distinctive instrument was the copper kettledrum (lilissu), played at prescribed cultic moments such as eclipse-observations; Rochberg documents the kalûs of the Ebabbar at Uruk declaring eclipses at the temple gate during the Neo-Babylonian-Achaemenid period. Brown adopts Parpola's identification of the kalû as one of the five Scholar-disciplines of the Sargonid court, alongside the ṭupšarru (scribe-scholar), āšipu (exorcist), bārû (extispicy-diviner), and asû (physician).
In Tradition
In Assyriological scholarship the kalû is treated as the operative cultic-musical specialist of the Mesopotamian temple apparatus, with its own training, instrumentation, and lamentation-prayer text-tradition (especially the Sumerian eršahunga laments). Rochberg integrates the kalû into the scholarly-profile of Seleucid astronomers to show that cultic ritual-specialism and mathematical astronomy coexisted in one person; Brown places the kalû in Parpola's five-discipline framework as closely interrelated with the celestial-diviner and exorcist roles.
In Practice
For students of Babylonian celestial divination, the kalû is the cultic-response counterpart to the ṭupšar Enūma Anu Enlil who reads the omen and the āšipu who performs the namburbî apotropaic ritual: the kalû performs lament before celestial bodies — sometimes by declaring an eclipse at the temple gate with the lilissu kettledrum — to appease supposedly angry gods. Brown notes that KAR 44 (the exorcist's manual) indicates EAE was part of kalû knowledge, and that in latest-period Babylonian compilation-colophons compilers signed themselves as ṭupšarru of EAE, kalû, or āšipu — but not as bārû or asû — testifying to late-period intermingling of celestial-divinatory, exorcistic, and lamentation-chanting expertise. Rochberg documents the Seleucid Uruk scholar Anu-aba-utēr (Sin-leqi-unninnī family, producer of the System A Jupiter ephemeris ACT 600) holding the combined titles kalû Anu u Antu and ṭupšar Enūma Anu Enlil — concrete evidence that lamentation-priesthood was compatible with mathematical-astronomy production. Distinct from the bārû (extispicy-diviner) and asû (physician): the kalû's domain is cultic-musical pacification of divine anger.
