Master of the Nativity

Definition

The Master of the Nativity is the single most authoritative planet in a birth chart — Greek oikodespotēs geneseōs (οἰκοδεσπότης γενέσεως, "house-master of the birth"), Arabic al-mubtazz al-mawlid. You find it by scoring essential dignity (domicile +5, exaltation +4, triplicity +3, bound +2, face +1) at five key degrees — the rising degree, the Sun, the Moon, the prenatal syzygy, and the Lot of Fortune — and taking the planet with the highest total. The Master is the chart's overall lord, distinct from the Lord of the Year and the kadhkhudhāh.

In Tradition

Astrologers read the oikodespotēs as the planet whose nature, sign, house, and condition most deeply colour the whole life. Greenbaum's The Daimon (Ch. 7 §2) treats Porphyry's way of identifying it as the planetary counterpart of the personal daimon — the guiding spirit — in the chart. Brennan, George, and Hand all keep the five-point tally as standard; the Arabic tradition (Masha'allah, 'Umar al-Tabari, Abu 'Ali al-Khayyāt) organizes the same scoring scheme under the name al-mubtazz al-mawlid.

In Practice

You first locate the five key degrees: the rising degree, the Sun's degree, the Moon's degree, the degree of the prenatal syzygy (the New or Full Moon just before birth — which one depends on which is closer, or on a given author's rule), and the degree of the Lot of Fortune. At each of the five, you score every planet: +5 if that degree falls in the planet's domicile sign, +4 if in its exaltation, +3 if it rules the triplicity, +2 if it owns the bound containing the degree, +1 if it owns the face (the decan). Add each planet's five scores together, and the highest total names the Master. You then read the Master's natal sign, house, dignity, aspects, sect agreement, and reception as the chart's overall lordship signal. If two planets tie, tiebreakers settle it — usually angularity, sect, and closeness to the rising degree.

Historical Origin

The oikodespotēs is named in Vettius Valens's Anthologiae and Ptolemy's Tetrabiblos III (2nd c. CE Greek, public domain), with the systematic five-point tally most clearly preserved in Porphyry's Introduction to Ptolemy's Tetrabiblos (3rd c. CE Greek, public domain). The Arabic-Persian al-mubtazz tradition sets down the scoring scheme — 'Umar al-Tabari, Abu 'Ali al-Khayyāt, Masha'allah, Bonatti — preserved in Persian Nativities Vols I-II through Dykes's editions. Modern Hellenistic-revival treatment by Brennan, George, and Greenbaum gives the working procedure.
