Part of Change

greek: κλῆρος (kleros) — Lot · latin: pars · arabic: sahm (سهم)

Definition

A calculated chart point in the family of Hellenistic-medieval Arabic Parts (Greek κλῆροι, kleroi; Latin partes), also known as the Part of Death. The standard formula is Ascendant + cusp of the Eighth House − Moon, producing a sensitive degree treated as a significator of transformation, mortality, and endings. The Part of Change belongs to the broader Parts tradition revived in medieval Latin and modern traditional practice from the Hellenistic and Hermetic-Egyptian source-base.

In Tradition

The Arabic-Parts doctrine is grounded in the Hellenistic-Hermetic Lots family. The standard Lot-formula pattern combines the Ascendant with two other chart-factors, with sect-flip between day and night for symmetric Lots. Liber Hermetis Ch. XXXV uses the Part of Fortune as life-expectancy pivot; Ch. XXXVI invokes the complementary Part of Daemon and Part of Cupid; Ch. XXXVII uses Part of Father / Mother for parental-death determination. The Part of Change extends this pattern to a transformation Lot from the Eighth-house cusp.

In Practice

Practitioners using the Parts in chart reading or directions calculate the Part of Change by adding the Ascendant degree and the Eighth-house cusp degree and subtracting the Moon degree, producing a sensitive point in the zodiac whose sign-and-house placement and aspects are read as significators of major transformations or endings. Contacts to the Part of Change by transit, direction, or progression (especially by Saturn, Pluto, or by malefic transit to its degree) are read by traditional practitioners as periods of significant change or mortality-themed events. In the medieval-Latin lineage Bonatti and the later Lilly tradition use the broader Parts family extensively in horary, electional, and natal practice; modern revival traditional practice (Zoller, Hand, Dykes) recovers the systematic doctrine, of which the Part of Change is one specialised application.

Historical Origin

The Arabic-Parts doctrine descends from the Hellenistic-Hermetic Lots tradition in Liber Hermetis (Zoller trans., Project Hindsight). Ch. XXXV–XXXVII record the canonical Lots: Part of Fortune (life-expectancy pivot, p. 213), Part of Daemon (biothanatos doctrine, p. 226), Part of Cupid (per Paulus Alexandrinus formula in Hand's footnote, p. 226), and Part of Father / Mother (parental-death indication, p. 230). The Part of Change is a Lilly-era extension applied to the Eighth-house topic.
