Precession of the Equinoxes

Definition

Precession is the slow westward drift of the spring and autumn equinox points relative to the fixed stars, caused by the gravitational pull of the Sun and Moon on Earth's equatorial bulge. The drift moves at roughly 50.3 arcseconds a year — about one degree every 72 years — and takes around 25,800 years to come full circle. It is the reason the tropical and sidereal zodiacs slowly pull apart.

In Tradition

Hellenistic, Arabic, and modern Western astrologers treat precession as a plain astronomical fact, and its astrological consequence is a choice: a tropical zodiac anchored to the moving spring point, or a sidereal zodiac anchored to the fixed-star background. Rochberg points out the contrast with Babylonian astronomy, which never recognised precession at all — the System A and System B vernal-point longitudes (10° and 8° Aries) stayed fixed against the stars throughout their use.

In Practice

Astrologers working in the tropical zodiac — the modern Western default — treat 0° Aries as permanently fixed at the spring equinox and simply set aside the precessional drift against the star constellations. Sidereal astrologers instead apply an ayanamsa, an offset currently around 24°, to longitudes taken from a tropical ephemeris, in order to recover positions against the Babylonian or Indian fixed-star reference. The same drift underlies the doctrine of astrological "ages" — Pisces, Aquarius — counted by which zodiacal constellation hosts the spring point at a given epoch.

Historical Origin

Hipparchus of Nicaea is credited with the first systematic European description of precession (c. 130 BCE), worked out by comparing his stellar coordinates against earlier Babylonian and Greek records. Ptolemy refined the rate in the *Almagest* (2nd c. CE) and discussed its astrological consequences in the *Tetrabiblos*. Neugebauer's "The Alleged Babylonian Discovery of the Precession of the Equinoxes" (JAOS 70, 1950) is the authoritative refutation of the claim that the Babylonians knew it.
