Quadruplicity

Definition
A quadruplicity is a set of four zodiac signs that share the same modality — the same basic way of moving through their season. There are three. Cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn) start each season and are the initiators. Fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius) hold the middle of each season and sustain. Mutable signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces) close each season and adapt. The four signs of any quadruplicity stand 90 or 180 degrees apart, forming a cross of squares and oppositions on the wheel.
In Tradition
Hellenistic and traditional Western astrologers use the three modalities to name a sign's dynamic posture — whether it initiates, holds, or transitions — kept separate from its element. Modern Western practice carries this on, reading a heavy concentration in one modality as a characteristic way of acting: cardinal as drive, fixed as endurance, mutable as adaptability.
In Practice
A common way to read temperament is to count a chart's placements by modality alongside element. Weighted toward cardinal, the picture tends to be initiating and action-oriented; toward fixed, stable and slow to change; toward mutable, responsive and often re-orienting. Modalities also shape aspect patterns: any T-square or grand cross sits entirely within one quadruplicity, so noting the modality of the planets involved tells you the natural stance of that tension.
Historical Origin
The tropical–solid–bicorporeal division — what we now call cardinal–fixed–mutable — is set out in Ptolemy's Tetrabiblos I.11 and is standard across the Hellenistic and Arabic compendia. Al-Biruni's Kitāb al-Tafhīm §380 names all three configurations explicitly: tropical (Aries-Cancer-Libra-Capricorn), fixed (Taurus-Leo-Scorpio-Aquarius), and bicorporeal (Gemini-Virgo-Sagittarius-Pisces), keeping the Greek terms.
