Rashi Dasha
sanskrit: राशि दशा (Rāśi Daśā)
Definition
A Rashi Dasha is a timing period run by a sign, not a planet — the class of dasha used in Jaimini astrology, where the rashis (zodiac signs) themselves take turns ruling stretches of life. Rao contrasts this with the Parashari system, whose dashas are nakshatra-based (timed by the Moon's lunar mansion) and named for nakshatra lordship; here the periods belong to the twelve signs, Aries through Pisces, and the sub-periods are named the same way. Named schemes in this class include Kendradi Rasi Dasa, Sudasa, Sandhya Dasa, and the Varnada Dasa.
In Tradition
Across the classical and modern Jyotish literature, a sign dasa's results are read not from the dasa sign on its own but from the Paka rasi — the sign occupied by the lord of the dasa sign (or of the reference lagna, the ascendant). BPHS calls it the Dasa asraya rasi, the sign that carries the period; Rath, Larsen, and Narasimha Rao all judge a dasa by the placement and strength of the Paka rasi and its lord.
In Practice
A jyotishi reckons each sign's period from a chosen starting point and reads the results through the sign-based machinery. In BPHS's Chara, Sthira, and Trikona dasas, the outcome is judged from two signs — the Paka rasi (the carrying or Dwara sign) and the Bhoga rasi (the experiencing or Bahya sign): a malefic tied to them tends to bring pain and agony, a benefic enjoyment (Kapoor). In the Narayana dasa, Larsen and Narasimha Rao treat the dasa lagna as the ascendant for the period and read the Paka rasi for where life's energy gathers. Narasimha Rao's Lagna Kendradi Rasi Dasa steps through the signs in quadrants-panapharas-apoklimas (kendradi gati) order and is used for material success, while Sudasa, reckoned from the Sree Lagna, is favored for wealth and status (Narasimha Rao); Rath applies Sudasa to financial timing. The Varnada Dasa is run to judge longevity (Santhanam).
Historical Origin
The sign-dasa class is set down in the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, where the Varnada Dasa (Ch.5), the Sandhya Dasa (Ch.46), and the Paka/Bhoga rasi rules for the Chara, Sthira, and Trikona dasas (Ch.51) appear — read here through the Santhanam and Kapoor translations of Maharshi Parasara. Modern accounts come from Rao (Predicting through Jaimini's Chara Dasha), Rath (Crux of Vedic Astrology), Larsen (Jyotisha Fundamentals), and Narasimha Rao (Vedic Astrology: An Integrated Approach).
