Ruchaka Yoga
ROO-chuck-uh YOH-guh
sanskrit: रुचक योग (Rucaka Yoga)
Definition
Ruchaka Yoga is the Mars version of the five Pancha Mahapurusha ("five great person") yogas. It forms when Mars sits in a kendra — an angle, meaning the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house — in its own sign or its sign of exaltation; some sources count the angle from the Ascendant or Moon and also allow moolatrikona. It marks the fullest expression of Mars's qualities.
In Tradition
Across the classical and modern Jyotish literature, Ruchaka is read as the Mars Mahapurusha yoga: when Mars sits strong in an angle in its own or exaltation sign, a person takes on a forceful, martial character — bravery, power, decisive energetic action and leadership. Phaladeepika groups it with Bhadra, Hamsa, Malavya and Sasa as the five such yogas of Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn.
In Practice
A jyotishi confirms Ruchaka by checking that Mars is in an angle in its own sign (Scorpio) or exalted, ideally strengthened further — Light on Life notes added strength when Mars escapes combustion, is aspected by its friend Jupiter, and re-forms the yoga in the navamsha (the ninth divisional chart). Frawley reads it as the "radiant combination" common to military leaders, politicians, lawyers and executives; Behari ties it to renown, wealth and conquest in the physical world; Raman gives bravery and power with arrogance, crediting Phaladeepika for the result. The tamasic (dark, heavy) side of Mars may instead bring domination or violence; in Hitler's chart deFouw & Svoboda list a forceful charismatic nature, love of war, much anger, a cruel personality and death by weapons or fire.
Historical Origin
The yoga is attested classically in the Phaladeepika of Mantreswara (Ch.6 Sl.1-2), in Sastri's translation. Modern authors restate it, among them Frawley (Astrology of the Seers), Levacy (Beneath a Vedic Sky), Behari (Fundamentals of Vedic Astrology), Raman (Notable Horoscopes), and deFouw & Svoboda (Light on Life).
