Tenth House
Definition
One of the four angular houses, beginning at the Midheaven (in quadrant systems) or covering the entire tenth sign from the Ascendant (in whole-sign systems). The tenth is traditionally the house of career, public reputation, status, authority, and worldly ambition. The Capricorn house in the natural zodiac, the tenth is ruled by Saturn as its planet of joy. In psychological-school readings (Martin, CPA lineage) the tenth also names the parent of authority and the mother, alongside its career signification.
In Tradition
Across Hellenistic, Western, and psychological traditions, the tenth house is read as the highest-visibility area of the chart — the place where you are seen, recognised, and held accountable in the public world. Modern psychological astrology (Sasportas, Martin) adds the projected-world layer: the tenth describes what you project onto the outside world and meet there as career, public face, and the authority-figure inheritance from the parents.
In Practice
Astrologers read the tenth house through its sign, the placement and condition of its ruler, and any planets within it. The MC sign and its ruler describe the vocational signature; planets in the tenth describe the most public faces of those planets' significations (Saturn in the tenth: serious, structuring, often slow to ripen; Jupiter in the tenth: expansive, teaching, often well-rewarded). Clare Martin's keyword for the house is 'Contributing,' framing it as the house of what one gives back to the world. The 4th–10th axis is the parental axis: tradition divides the parents between the two ends, with Martin's psychological reading placing the mother in the tenth and the father in the fourth (other lineages reverse the assignment).
Historical Origin
The tenth-house topical assignments — career, public reputation, the climax of life — are codified in Hellenistic sources (Valens Anthologiae, Firmicus Mathesis Book II) and inherited through the Arabic-Latin and modern Western traditions. Firmicus identifies the Midheaven as the angle from which the basis of the whole chart is deduced; the tenth as the place of maximum visibility is canonical from the earliest horoscopic sources. The CPA-lineage psychological-school reading (mother in the tenth) and Martin's keyword convention ('Contributing') are 20th-century developments.
