Tenth House (Karma Bhava)
sanskrit: कर्म भाव / दशम भाव (Karma Bhāva / Daśama Bhāva)
Definition
In Vedic astrology the tenth house is the Karma Bhava — the house of action. It governs your works, profession, occupation, career and means of livelihood, along with your public status, honours, dignity and fame. Rath names Saturn its karaka (the planet that signifies works), with Jupiter, Mercury and the Sun adding prosperity, profession and fame. It sits at the mid-heaven, the top of the chart, and Rath holds it second in importance only to the lagna (rising sign). Uttara Kalamrita also calls it Rajya — kingdom or sovereignty.
In Tradition
Across the classical and modern Jyotish texts gathered here, the tenth house is read as the house of karma — your action and outward conduct — and its central concern is your profession, occupation and public standing. These sources agree in stretching its meaning beyond mere earning: it is where your qualities show themselves outwardly, in social and worldly life.
In Practice
A jyotishi (Vedic astrologer) reads the tenth house to judge your profession, occupation and means of livelihood. Raman calls pinning down the profession the hardest yet most important part of judging a chart, since the variety of modern callings makes exact vocational prediction nearly impossible. Behari notes that karma carries more than the English 'action' or 'livelihood': he joins it with vyapara (commerce) and jivanam (livelihood) as how your inherent qualities show themselves in social life. The Horasara (Prithuyasas, Ch.XXII v.1-3) judges acquired wealth from planets in the tenth counted from the lagna, Moon or Sun; the wealth's source follows whichever planet sits there; if the tenth is empty, livelihood is read from its ruler or its Navamsa (divisional-chart) lord. Uttara Kalamrita treats a link between the tenth and ninth lords as the central Raja-yoga axis, said to bring kingship, wealth and happiness. Rath observes that a low ashtakavarga score weakens a chart, while planets in the tenth generally give good results.
Historical Origin
The tenth house as Karma Bhava is attested in classical Sanskrit texts and developed by modern authors. Prithuyasas' Horasara (Chapter XXII, verses 1-3) is quoted on livelihood from the tenth, and the delineation notes that Prithuyasas substitutes 'brother' for Varaha Mihira's 'foe' for Mars. Uttara Kalamrita (Ch.IV, translated by Sastri) names it karma and rajya, the strongest kendra (angular house). Modern treatments include Rath's Crux of Vedic Astrology, Raman and Vasudev's How to Judge a Horoscope, and Behari's Vedic Astrologer's Handbook.
