Definition

The vernal equinox is the moment each year when the Sun crosses the celestial equator from south to north, producing equal day and night across the Earth and marking the beginning of astronomical spring in the northern hemisphere. In tropical-zodiac astrology, the vernal-equinox point fixes 0° Aries — the origin of zodiacal longitude from which all other ecliptic positions are measured. The point precesses slowly westward through the constellations at roughly 1° per 72 years owing to Earth's axial wobble.

The vernal equinox is foundational to Western tropical-zodiac doctrine. Holden in *A History of Horoscopic Astrology* defines: 'The tropical zodiac is a zodiac measured from the vernal equinox, invented by Hipparchus in the second century B.C.' Crane confirms: 'the tropical zodiac corresponds to the rhythm of the length of light during a year and the symmetry of the daily cycle.' Bonatti's *Liber Astronomiae* preserves the medieval Latin rationales for Aries-priority by way of the vernal-equinox seasonal pivot.

Practitioners use the vernal equinox in three operations. First, it sets the reference frame: all tropical-zodiac longitudes are reckoned from 0° Aries, the vernal-equinox point. Second, it is the natal moment for the annual mundane Aries Ingress chart — the chart cast for the moment the Sun enters Aries at a given geographic location, used to predict events for the year following. Third, it serves as the conceptual hinge for precession-correction work: a star or fixed point fixed by sidereal longitude in 1000 BCE has shifted by the precession rate in tropical-zodiac coordinates over the intervening centuries.
