Yantra

sanskrit: यन्त्र (Yantra)

Definition

A yantra is an inscribed, mystic geometrical power-diagram used in Jyotish (Indian astrology) as a remedial measure tied to a planet or deity. Frawley describes it as the visible form, or energy-body, of a mantra and of the planet it corresponds to. He divides them into numerical yantras, in which numbers are inscribed (the planetary yantras built on the magic square of five), and geometric yantras, based on designs such as the Surya yantra. deFouw and Svoboda describe it as a diagram inscribed on metal, used to augment a person's well-being.

In Tradition

Across this modern Jyotish writing, the yantra is treated as a diagram inscribed on metal and used as a remedial measure — a way to work with the energies the grahas (planets) stand for. Frawley frames it as propitiatory, in the manner of a mantra; deFouw and Svoboda set it within the idea that metals and gems can augment or lessen those planetary energies.

In Practice

Frawley says a yantra is useful much like a gem, but because it is propitiatory by nature, like a mantra, it carries none of the side-effects and can be used by anyone. He suggests it is most helpful to turn to the yantras of the planets that are afflicting you, or those whose qualities you wish to strengthen. In his account they are used together with their mantras and with meditation, inscribed in copper, silver, or gold, and can be used to energize water or medicines, placed on altars, or worn like gems. deFouw and Svoboda note that metals inscribed with such yantras are routinely used by jyotishis (Vedic astrologers), though it is a complex system whose expertise few of them still hold.

Historical Origin

The yantra is documented here only in modern Jyotish works: David Frawley's The Astrology of the Seers, which treats it under remedial measures and again in its Sanskrit Glossary, and Light on Life by deFouw and Svoboda. The supplied sources carry no classical-text attestation and no dating; all of this is modern paraphrase.
