Zuben Elgenubi

Definition

Zuben Elgenubi is the alpha star of the constellation Libra, designated Alpha Librae, traditionally read as the southern scale of the Balance. The Arabic name al-zubānā al-janūbiyya (الزبانى الجنوبية, 'the southern claw') preserves the older Hellenistic naming in which the same star marked the southern claw of the Scorpion (chelae). In the Egyptian astronomical tradition the star is decan 11 of the wjA Boat-constellation group at the late Senenmut Table 4.4, named xntt Hrt; in the Arabic Manazil al-Qamar tradition it functions as the indicator star for Mansion 16 Al-Zubana ('The Claws').

Across the Hellenistic, Egyptian, and Arabic-Persian transmission lineages Zuben Elgenubi anchors the southern scale or southern claw of the Libra-Scorpio boundary region. Ptolemy assigns the bright stars in the middle of Libra (originally the claws of the Scorpion) a Saturn-Mars complexion, and the Arabic mansion-tradition fixes Zuben Elgenubi as the leading indicator-star for Mansion 16 at a precessed position near 15° Scorpio 20' (Warnock 2019).

Practitioners use Zuben Elgenubi in three distinct ways. As an indicator star, the star's precessed longitude marks the leading boundary of Lunar Mansion 16 Al-Zubana; Warnock fixes the 2019 position at 15° Scorpio 20'. As a per-degree fixed star, the star is read by direct longitudinal conjunction-aspect to natal points, transits, or ingress charts under Ptolemy's Saturn-Mars complexion. As a constellational anchor, the Egyptian decan-tradition places the star at decan 11 of the wjA Boat — the Libra-Scorpio-Sagittarius decan group anchored by Antares — making Zuben Elgenubi a continuity-marker across the Egyptian Boat / Hellenistic Scales / Arabic Claws receptions. Reading-frames inflect the practitioner's emphasis: indicator-star work centres mansion-electional applications; per-degree work centres natal conjunctions; decan work treats the star as part of the broader Libra-Scorpio group. The star's near-ecliptic latitude makes longitudinal conjunction-aspect the practical reading.

Historical Origin

Zuben Elgenubi is attested in the Egyptian New Kingdom astronomical ceilings (Senenmut tomb c. 1470 BCE) as decan 11 of the Boat-constellation, in the Hellenistic Liber Hermetis (via the chelae naming-pattern), and in the medieval Arabic Manazil al-Qamar tradition compiled by Warnock 2019 via Vivian Robson 1923. The Arabic name al-zubānā al-janūbiyya is medieval Islamic-astronomical, preserving the older Greek χηλαί (chēlai, 'claws') naming.
