Definition

Energeia (Greek for "being-at-work," "activity," "actualization") is a Greek philosophical word that takes on a particular technical sense in Hellenistic astrology: a planet's "property of actualization" — the particular way a planet does its work in the place it sits, as distinct from how strong or how intense that work is. The English word "energy" comes from it, but the Greek sense is closer to "operation" or "being-at-work." The same word also names the active workings of the daimons (guiding spirits) and the decans in Hermetic cosmology.

In its technical sense energeia describes how a planet works, not how strong it is. In the modern reconstruction of Paulus Alexandrinus' doctrine of practice, the property of actualization is the particular way a planet acts in a place — smoothly, in fits and starts, or with intensity. In the Hermetic layer the word carries a cosmological sense: Greenbaum shows energeia naming the activity by which daimons and decans work as agents of fate.

In Practice

When you assess how a planet expresses what it signifies, energeia turns your attention to the manner of that expression and not only to its size. In the Hellenistic procedure reconstructed from Paulus, once the significator of a person's vocation has been located you read its energeia — the planet's way of being-at-work in its place — to see whether the person's action runs steadily, erratically, or with intensity, with the resulting "keenness" of activity treated as growing out of that manner. So you use the idea alongside dignity, sect, and condition: those factors weigh whether a planet can deliver its topics at all, while energeia describes the texture of how it delivers them. In the Hermetic-philosophical layer the term has a different working use — it names the activity through which daimons and the thirty-six decans act on the material world as instruments of fate — so on meeting energeia in a source you work out from context whether the planet-specific actualization sense or the broader daimonic-operation sense is meant.

Historical Origin

Energeia is a Greek philosophical term — central to Aristotle and the Stoics — that the Hellenistic astrological tradition adapts to a technical use. Its astrological sense as a planet's "property of actualization" is set out in Robert Schmidt's translator-apparatus to Paulus Alexandrinus' Introductory Matters, glossing Paulus' doctrine of practice.
