Complete Guide to Astrological Aspects

Understanding Planetary Relationships

Master all astrological aspects from conjunctions to quincunxes. Learn orb values, major vs minor aspects, and how to interpret aspect patterns in Zodisphere.

What Are Aspects?

Aspects are the angular relationships between planets in a chart. When two planets are a specific number of degrees apart, they form an aspect — a connection that blends their energies in a particular way. Aspects are the "wiring" of a chart, showing how different parts of your personality communicate.

The Major Aspects

Sextile60°Soft (opportunity)Cooperation, skill, effort-based flow

Minor Aspects

Quincunx (Inconjunct)150°Awkward disconnect, requires adaptation
Semi-square45°Low-grade friction, subtle irritation
Sesquiquadrate135°Persistent tension, requires compromise
Quintile72°Creative talent, unique gifts
Bi-quintile144°Creative expression, specialized abilities

Understanding Orbs

An orb is the margin of error allowed for an aspect. A "conjunction with a 2° orb" means the planets are within 2° of exact. Tighter orbs produce stronger effects. Zodisphere uses standard orbs: 8° for major aspects (10° for luminaries), 2° for minor aspects.

Using Aspects in Zodisphere

  • Toggle aspects on/off with the "A" keyboard shortcut or the display toggles
  • Choose between 2D (zodiac ring) and 3D (orbital) aspect lines in settings
  • Filter by aspect type: major, minor, quintile, septile series
  • Filter by planet group: luminaries, personal, outer, nodes, asteroids
  • The Aspect Panel lists all aspects with orbs, sorted by strength

Frequently Asked Questions

Are squares bad and trines good?

No. Squares provide motivation and drive, while trines can lead to taking things for granted. Both serve important roles. Squares push you to grow; trines give you natural ability. The best outcomes often come from squares that you've learned to work with.

What orb should I use?

Standard orbs are 8° for major aspects (some give 10° for Sun and Moon aspects), and 1-2° for minor aspects. Tighter orbs are more noticeable in daily life. As you gain experience, you may find that orbs of 5-6° are more reliable for natal chart work.

Do aspects between outer planets matter in my chart?

Aspects between outer planets (like Uranus-Neptune or Neptune-Pluto) are generational — everyone born within a multi-year period has them. They matter most when they involve a personal planet or angle in your chart.
