Hellenistic Astrology Techniques
Ancient Methods for Modern Charts
Explore the core techniques of Hellenistic astrology: sect, lots, essential dignities, time lords, and whole sign houses. Learn how ancient methods enhance modern practice.
What Is Hellenistic Astrology?
Hellenistic astrology is the original form of horoscopic astrology, developed in the Greco-Roman world from approximately the 2nd century BCE to the 7th century CE. It forms the foundation of both Western and Vedic astrology. Key practitioners include Vettius Valens, Ptolemy, Dorotheus of Sidon, and Firmicus Maternus.
Sect: Day vs Night Charts
Sect divides charts into day births (Sun above horizon) and night births (Sun below). Each sect has a benefic, malefic, and luminary that are more favorable: Day sect: Sun (luminary), Jupiter (benefic), Saturn (least malefic) Night sect: Moon (luminary), Venus (benefic), Mars (least malefic)
The Lots (Arabic Parts)
Lots are calculated points derived from the positions of three chart factors. The most important is the Lot of Fortune: ASC + Moon - Sun (day) or ASC + Sun - Moon (night). The Lot of Spirit reverses the formula. These points activate specific houses and topics.
Whole Sign Houses
The original house system of Hellenistic astrology. Each sign = one house. The Ascendant's sign is the entire 1st house, the next sign is the entire 2nd house, etc. Many modern astrologers are returning to this system for its simplicity and consistency.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should I use Whole Sign or Placidus houses?
Both are valid. Whole Sign is the original system and simplifies house boundaries. Placidus is the modern standard and factors in birth latitude. Many astrologers use Whole Sign for ancient techniques and Placidus for modern interpretation. Try both in Zodisphere.
What is sect and why does it matter?
Sect determines which planets are more supportive in your chart. In a day chart, Jupiter is your strongest benefic and Mars is the more challenging malefic. In a night chart, Venus is your strongest benefic and Saturn is the more challenging malefic. This reversal fundamentally changes interpretation.
