Understanding Transits in Astrology
How Current Planets Affect Your Birth Chart
Learn how planetary transits work, how to read a transit chart, and how to use Zodisphere's Transit Panel to track the real-time planetary influences on your natal chart.
What Are Transits?
Transits are the real-time movements of planets through the zodiac and how they interact with the positions in your birth chart. When a transiting planet forms an aspect (conjunction, opposition, trine, square, sextile) to one of your natal planets, it activates that area of your life.
Think of your birth chart as a fixed blueprint and transiting planets as visitors knocking on different doors. Each transit has a beginning (when it enters orb), an exact hit (strongest effect), and a separation (when it moves out of orb).

How to Read Transits in Zodisphere
- Open the Transit Panel from the analysis toolbar (or use the Personal Transit Panel for a filtered view)
- Your natal planet positions are listed with currently active transits alongside them
- Each transit shows: the transiting planet, aspect type, orb (how exact it is), and whether it's applying or separating
- Tighter orbs (closer to 0°) indicate stronger, more immediate effects
- Click any transit to see interpretive text explaining its meaning
Major Transit Types
Not all transits are created equal. The most significant transits involve slow-moving planets (Jupiter through Pluto) forming aspects to personal planets (Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars) or angles (Ascendant, Midheaven).
- Conjunction (0°) — Intensifies and initiates; the transiting planet merges with your natal planet's energy
- Opposition (180°) — Creates tension and awareness through external events or other people
- Square (90°) — Produces friction and pressure that demands action or change
- Trine (120°) — Flows easily; opportunities that require you to take advantage of them
- Sextile (60°) — Gentle opportunities; requires conscious effort to activate
Planetary Return Transits
A planetary return occurs when a transiting planet returns to the exact degree it occupied at your birth. The most discussed are Saturn Return (~29.5 years), Jupiter Return (~12 years), and Solar Return (annual birthday chart). Each marks the beginning of a new cycle for that planet's themes.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a transit last?
It depends on the planet's speed. Moon transits last hours, Mars transits last 1-2 weeks, while Pluto transits can last 1-2 years. An outer planet transit going retrograde can hit the same natal point up to 3 times over several months.
What are the most important transits to watch?
Saturn and Jupiter transits to your natal Sun, Moon, Ascendant, and Midheaven are the most universally significant. Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto transits to natal planets are generational but deeply transformative when they hit your personal placements.
Can transits predict specific events?
Transits show themes and timing, not specific events. A Saturn-Sun transit might bring career pressure, but whether it manifests as a promotion, job loss, or new responsibility depends on many factors including your choices, other chart patterns, and life circumstances.
What is an applying vs separating transit?
An applying transit is getting closer to exact — its influence is building. A separating transit has already been exact and is moving away — its influence is fading. Applying transits are generally felt more strongly.
